Rio de Janeiro beaches are some of the greatest attractions of the city, both for tourists and the “Cariocas” as well.
The more distant and calm beaches, like Recreio, Grumari, and Prainha, have attracted many people because of their still preserved beauty.
Yet, the more well-known beaches like Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon are still a hit.
Flamengo Beach:
It spreads all over the Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes park (“Aterro do Flamengo”). Like all beaches inside the bay (Flamengo, Botafogo, Urca, and Praia Vermelha), the sea is calm, but not good for bathing.
Botafogo:
It is 700 m long, and deep inside Botafogo cove.
Urca:
A small beach, only 100 m long. It’s at the bottom of Morro da Urca.
Vermelha:
With 243 m of yellow, coarse sand, it’s main landscapes are Morro da Urca and Pão de Açúcar (the Sugar Loaf).
Leme:
It is, in fact, the beginning of Copacabana beach. More specifically, the 1-kilometer stretch from Leme hill to Princesa Isabel Avenue.
Copacabana:
The most famous beach of Rio, with 4.15 kilometers. Despite its waters are sometimes inadequate for bathing, it’s always crowded, mainly with tourists.
Arpoador:
It’s the “tip” of Ipanema beach. It’s 500-m long, going from Copacabana Fortress to the corner of Francisco Otaviano Street and Vieira Souto Avenue.
Ipanema:
A praised spot, it’s a point for Rio’s south zone youth. It’s 2.2 km long.
Leblon:
Leblon beach has the same extension of land as Ipanema beach, going from the flowers garden called Jardim de Alah to the hill named Morro Dois Irmãos.
São Conrado:
Located at the bottom of the mounts named Pedra da Gávea and Pedra Bonita, where there is a ramp for hang gliding.
Barra da Tijuca:
It goes along Sernambetiba Avenue to Recreio. It’s 12 km long, the longest beach in town. As of Ayrton Senna Avenue, the beach has no promenade, as that is a protected environmental reservation.
Recreio dos Bandeirantes:
It’s a 2-km long small bay at the end of Sernambetida Avenue.
Prainha:
A small strip of sand, with 150 m and rough sea, located at the end of Recreio beach. It’s a must for surfers.
Grumari:
The access is by Guaratiba road. Red sand in the middle of a wild scenario. Rough sea.
